Spring, day 2

10-15″ inches of snow expected around here today. Guess I’ll be spending some of my half day off doing some snowshoeing. A Good Friday, indeed.

You need to hear this speech

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008 | General | 2 Comments

Obama’s fantastic speech from Philadelphia on race and the steps we need to take to get America on the path to a better future.

It’s 37 minutes long, but it’s well worth the time it takes to watch it. Whether or not you’re an Obama fan, this is a speech too important to miss.

Matthew Baldwin’s got a great song lyrics trivia game over at The Morning News today. Seems like it should be a piece of cake (and some questions are), but overall it’s much harder than it looks.

I just finished my first run through it and only have 25 of 50 of the answers. Time to take a second (and likely third) look at the rest of the questions.

Quick tip: Careful where you mouse around on the page. If you mouse over the “Answer” links, the url for the links shows the song and artist. Call it cheating or call it a spoiler, it’s still bad news. So watch your cursor.

Creepy, but cool

Urban exploration photos of Neverland Ranch. Very, very cool. And completely Michael Jackson-free (except for his name appearing on a control panel).

Good morning, hungover people

Can I get you something with green food color? (*snicker*)

(Yes, I’m a St. Patrick’s Day nerd. I stayed in last night. I wisely decided to go have my pints in relative peace and quiet on Sunday evening. And they sure as hell weren’t green.)

I can’t decide if this is brilliant or cruel

PowerPoint Karaoke

The person in front of the room launches into a completely impromptu talk from a PowerPoint slide deck she has never seen before. The results are openly, gleefully absurd.

Sure, the PowerPoint aspect is cruel, but the idea is fantastic. And it can’t be any more torturous than regular karaoke.

(And no, it wasn’t lost on me that a lexicographer wrote this article. She’s got a pretty entertaining blog, too, if you want to check that out.)

Thank you, Morning News. Very, very handy.

Cold = defeated

Now can I have my voice back? I’m tired of sounding like Marge Simpson.

A note to my cold

You may have the upper hand now, little plague, but mark my words, I will defeat you. It’s my respiratory system — flawed as it is — and I will have it back. You can’t hide in there forever.

OMG. Yes.

Now if you’ll all excuse me, I think I just drooled on myself and need to go clean up.

3pm, the day before Thanksgiving. I believe that means it’s Beer O’Clock at work.

Thanks for going on the beer run, Jack. And thanks for the offer of the loan for your knife earlier. It’s probably a good thing I didn’t take you up on it.

W.T.F. Wisconsin?

There aren’t words to describe how sickened I am by the way my state (though not anyone I actually know) voted on the two ballot referendums on Tuesday.

I think Pete sums it up pretty well, though.

More drooling over Ned Kahn’s work

Tuesday, October 3rd, 2006 | General | 1 Comment

For those of you who can’t get down to the Milwaukee lakefront to see Ned Kahn’s fantastic Wind Leaves sculpture, he’s now got info on it at his site. Click the video link to the right of the name to see the sculpture in action. There are no shots of anyone playing the xylophone benches, but about 2/3 of the way through, there are shots of people playing with the pebble instrument. And while there is wind noise in the video, much of the fluttering noise you hear are the wind leaves themselves. They rustle.

Every time that commercial of yours that uses “Salisbury Hill” comes on, all I can think is: “Shining!

I have yet to hear your message, but I have a powerful urge to re-do some Stanley Kubrick films.

Just sayin’.

Sightseeing with Fred

Fred Willard seems like he’d be an interesting guy to hang out with. I’d have loved to have been on this tour of Manhattan with him. Sounds like he knew where all the good stuff was.

Janeen follow-up

Sunday, March 5th, 2006 | General | 1 Comment

Since there are a lot of people who knew Janeen — many of whom I don’t know — finding my last entry, this seems like a good place to give details on her memorial service. It will be held on Wed., March 15 from 6-8 pm at the Mitchell Park Domes with a memorial at 6:30 pm.

There was a notice in Sunday’s Journal Sentinel. Directions to the Domes can be found here.
