Book love

I’ve only been in six of these libraries (Prague, Boston, DC, NYC, Georgetown, Dublin), but I’m definitely going to make it a point to see more of them. They’re gorgeous.

Cool little chart showing what happens after the humans are gone.

Day 1 is good. After that, things get a bit messy for awhile.

The yearly “How to Feel Old” list

Time for Beloit College to make anyone over 30 feel tragically old again.

I think I’ve spent too much time on the internet.

Had to go in search of a cute animal stock photo this morning. Realized that I am now completely incapable of looking through animal shots without mentally adding lolcat captions to them.

It’s bacon!

Mmm. Bacon and bacon-related products. I can feel my arteries slamming shut just thinking about it. *drool*

I still want to try that bacon chocolate bar. That sounds awesome. Not too sure about the bacon cotton candy, though.

All better

My neighbor and her recently-moved-in boyfriend are upstairs screaming at each other and stomping their feet to make their points. (Yes, a point is more strongly made if my light fixtures rattle and shake.) So I was more than happy that I decided I’d take one quick look at MetaFilter before I went to bed to see if there was anything interesting. Found this wonderful story about a Craigslist ad from a couple heading to Toronto for their wedding. It completely made my day.

Silly but excellent web site for Miranda July’s new book release: No one belongs here more than you

I don’t know I would have picked this book up before, but I’m intrigued now.

This needs to be implemented

Matthew Baldwin’s brilliant idea for internet access captchas.

Make sure you try it a few times to see them all. And fail it once, just for fun.

Apropos of nothing, m@ sent me the following today:

step 22 is the hardest

Why, yes. Yes, it is.

Dammit, Steelbuddha

I’ve had to explain to three people already what I’m laughing at, and I’m only 1/4 of the way through the page.

They didn’t study.

(Make sure you read the entire “El Niño” report. You can skip the comments after the post, though.)

When do I get my cape?

I love the webcomic xkcd (even if I don’t always get the math jokes), and this one in particular cracked me up but good. So I was tickled when I found a link to this photo on this morning.

Good one, Cory.

Brendan & Linus: Are you kicking yourselves for not thinking of this first?

Yeah, but for which console?

Time to shop for some new video games. Should I choose Accordian Hero II? Or maybe Grand Theft Ottoman? Decisions, decisions.

All the games look pretty good. And Nazgul Thunder includes something the LOTR movies forgot to: Tom Bombadil.

It all makes so much sense now

Non-conformists unite!

Thursday, February 22nd, 2007 | Design-y Bits, Fun With Teh Intarweb | 2 Comments

I’m thinking I need to join the Non-conformists Union. None of the other groups I belong to are fulfilling my irony needs to the extent I think they can.

You’ll also want to make sure you stop by the site of one of the union’s activists, The Retrovert. It’s vintage graphic heaven, especially if you’re a fan of the old WPA art. (Which, of course, I am. I should probably just sign over my next paycheck now.)

And I’d just like to take this moment to apologize to BB for sending her these links earlier this afternoon. (I’m sorry I distracted you from anything else you may have gotten done today.)

Amusing. Excellent use of the music.

Or as I like to think of it, “Cate’s birthday”

Tuesday, February 13th, 2007 | Fun With Teh Intarweb | No Comments

Well, Valentine’s Day is almost upon us again. I get the whole “sharing of affection” sentiment, but it’s such a crass, commercial holiday that you can’t help but hate it. I can’t decide if the day is worse when you’re single and being beaten over the head with implications that your life is a failure because you don’t have that special someone to fawn over you, or when you’re part of a couple and have to deal with all that pressure to do up the holiday. Luckily, this year I’ll be spending the evening at a hockey game, watching large men punch each other and hit a little rubber disk around the ice. Absolutely no Valentine’s pressure in that situation. I’ll also take a moment out of the day to wish Miss Cate a very happy birthday, ‘coz that’s really what the day’s all about. (Right, Cate?)

But for those of you who will be buying your significant other gifties and figuring out the best purchase to say “I love you to bits, really I do”, here’s a list of Valentine’s gifts you should avoid.

Or you could follow this simple guide to finding the perfect Valentine’s Day gift. Your choice.

Mark it “best of”

A fine, fine rant on Craigslist that should definitely get the “best of” nod.

(Thanks to coworker Travis for the link.)

Beware the cuteness

Thursday, January 25th, 2007 | Fun With Teh Intarweb | 2 Comments

Little tiny kitten, little tiny sweater

Curse you, Cute Overload. You make me make the squishy cute noises. How am I supposed to be a bad ass once my enemies learn they can temporarily distract me using only super-adorable kitten photos?
