Nerdery ahoy

Tuesday, October 3rd, 2006 | Fun With Teh Intarweb | 1 Comment

Yes, you heard me. I said “nerdery.”

Shamus from Twenty Sided went and got himself a copy of Comic Book Creator, then created himself a comic combining Lord of the Rings with D&D. “Imagine a gaggle of modern hack-n-slash roleplayers who had somehow never been exposed to the original Tolkien mythos, and then imagine taking those players and trying to introduce them to Tolkien via a D&D campaign.” The series starts here. (And actually, the comic under the “My New Toy” heading is pretty amusing, too.)

It’s been a wonderful way to liven up an otherwise boring work morning. Can’t wait for the next installment.

And also, from now on, I’m referring to Frodo as “Dave.”

At least they wouldn’t be as saggy as most everyone else’s at the home.

Moo Minicards

I soooo want to get some of these fabulous Flickr minicards. (If you’re a Pro user, the first 10 cards are free.) Think I’ll wait until after vacation, though, just in case I get some shots that I want to include.

Off to the library

Banned Books Week is coming up (Sept. 23-30), so it’s time to brush up on those naughty, naughty books again. Here’s a handy-dandy list of reasons for the banning/censorship for each book.

I really should read To Kill a Mockingbird again. I have vague memories of the storyline, but the thing I remember most about it is Scout suggesting “Spit on it. Spit on it some more.” when they were trying to fix the squeak in the gate. That’s probably not the takeaway message Harper Lee was going for.

Remember when…?

Wednesday, September 6th, 2006 | Fun With Teh Intarweb | 1 Comment

Wow. This is fantastic.

The Milwaukee Journal ran a series on Milwaukee history called “Remember when?” from 1963 through 1994. I always loved reading that bit. The commentary wasn’t all that much to write home about, but it was fun to look at the old photos of Milwaukee and see how much the city had changed.

Today I went looking for something on our library’s site and found out that the Milwaukee Public Library has selected photos from the series online! Lots of great stuff to poke through. Seeing all the old mansions is kind of depressing, though. These days, when I to drive through the Marquette campus I just try to ignore the fact they’re not there any more, but dozens of ugly, boxy buildings are. Nope. Didn’t happen if I pretend it didn’t. Mansions are still standing. La, la, la.

I love this shot of the lakefront, pre-Art Museum. Sure does look strange without those buildings and without the massive landfill area to the north.

Fellow East Siders, check this out — there’s plenty of parking! Whoa.

Wow.

Masking tape tech support

If tape is too technical for you, maybe you should just hire someone to do the work.

Yet another round of Amazon product reviews. This time, they’re all written by Jon Swift, a man who has never used or read any of these products.

And my review of his work (which I actually have read) — “Quite entertaining.”

Whoops! That’s not FDR.

It’s too bad it’s $30, or I’d have to get one for the humor value.

Make sure you check out the comments on the Target site. They’re pretty entertaining. (Hey! And one of ‘em is from Milwaukee!) Also note that there’s a whole set of these dolls. Wonder if the Nixon doll says “I am not a crook.”

Must. Have.

I feel so old

So the kids entering college this year were born the year I graduated from high school. If that weren’t depressing enough for me, most of what’s on this year’s Beloit College mindset list is.

Wayne Gretzky never played for Edmonton.

Oh, that’s just not right. You kids need to study your history.

I am becoming thoroughly addicted to Oceangram.

I threw my virtual message in earlier today. Found my first bottle with a message in it just a few minutes ago. (And then responded and threw it back.) It read:

Amazon.com reviews of milk

The night was much like my soul. Cold, dark, and wet. The knife slid from my hand having done it’s job of knifing. Blood trickled from my wrists like paint running down an over-painted painting.

Just then, the urge to LIVE struck me! I had to live! FOR HER! I looked all around me for help! I found nothing usefull, some gauze here, tape there, a fully stocked blood transfusion kit, a functional phone, NOTHING to help me, except for the cold glass of Tuscan Milk, 1 gallon, 128 fl oz.

Viral marketing strikes again

Coudal Partners, I *heart* you.

Pause the video at the top of the page and watch the video (or at least some of the video) in the agency.com video link in the paragraph below the video first. Then come back and watch Coudal’s video. Lovely.

And speaking of viral marketing, tip o’ the hat to Von Herwig for the Snakes on a Plane goodness.
