Mmm. Cake.

Friday, April 20th, 2007 | Design-y Bits | 3 Comments

Sheesh. I’m happy when I can get the layers even on a cake. No way I could ever make cakes as amazing as these.

And actually, as I’m not a frosting fan, I don’t know that I’d be much good at eating them, either. But they sure are pretty to look at.

Silly but excellent web site for Miranda July’s new book release: No one belongs here more than you

I don’t know I would have picked this book up before, but I’m intrigued now.

What’s in your logo?

Can’t remember where I found this one. If I stole it from you, please feel free to speak up.

Also: I could not choose between Saul Bass and Paul Rand. They’ll just both have to win.

Brilliant, but evil

Help wanted ads from London’s Lunar BBDO agency, written completely in dingbat fonts. (And yes, because I’m a huge dork, I’m deciphering it. I don’t actually want the job, but I must know what it says.)

Fantastic shot from the Astronomy Picture of the Day from a day last month: Lightning, comet and fireworks. Nice one.

Wish I remembered to check that site more often. Thanks to The Morning News for the reminder.

Non-conformists unite!

Thursday, February 22nd, 2007 | Design-y Bits, Fun With Teh Intarweb | 2 Comments

I’m thinking I need to join the Non-conformists Union. None of the other groups I belong to are fulfilling my irony needs to the extent I think they can.

You’ll also want to make sure you stop by the site of one of the union’s activists, The Retrovert. It’s vintage graphic heaven, especially if you’re a fan of the old WPA art. (Which, of course, I am. I should probably just sign over my next paycheck now.)

And I’d just like to take this moment to apologize to BB for sending her these links earlier this afternoon. (I’m sorry I distracted you from anything else you may have gotten done today.)

Want!

I must have one of these radiators.

No, wait. The cats will insist I order two.

The rest of the competition entries can be found here.

I Drew This

Ok, so I didn’t draw anything. But if I could draw (which I most certainly can’t) and I were intent on drawing a comic strip, this is the kind of thing I probably would draw. Dig? Good. Now go check it out. And browse through the archives. There are some good ones in there.

23 Signs That You’re Becoming a Design Geek

I use #20 A LOT. Except I (correctly) say “command-Z”. *snicker*

Or maybe it does. Who knows?

I was talking with one of the designers who works on projects for a client of ours that makes scrapbooking supplies and wall art. She’s working on an alphabet set and realized she’d skipped from G to K (luckily only after she’d gotten to L). I said, “Well, it’s only a couple of letters and they’re not really all that important. Unless, of course, you’re spelling ‘jihad’. But how much does that come up in scrapbooks these days?”

Baby websites are the cutest

Congrats to my coworkers — including BB — on today’s launch of the new Travel Wisconsin tourism site! A monsterous amount of work went into that site. It looks fantastic. (And thanks to the team for allowing me to share in the post-launch pizza feast, despite only actually doing about a week or so’s worth of work on the site. You guys are the best. Now go home and get some sleep.)

I love my Macs

But clearly not as much as these people do. (I feel like such a Mac slacker.)

Have too much money laying around?

Then you could buy yourself this lovely $165 sterling silver bubble blowing wand.

Or, you know, do something frivolous with the money. Like help the poor. But that would be silly ‘coz then you wouldn’t be able to blow bubbles.

Empty drawers

I won’t make it to NYC in time to check this exhibit out myself, but if you find yourself in Manhattan and can make it down to the World Financial Center, Floodwall looks like it would be pretty cool.

I love that she’s trying to pair up stories with the drawers. I think it’s unlikely that she’ll get many, but it’s a great idea.

I found a Flickr set of photos of the exhibit. Looks like it goes on forever.

Tiny pinhole, big beautiful photos

Tuesday, January 9th, 2007 | Design-y Bits | No Comments

Beautiful pinhole photographs by Xiao Shan on Flickr.

His stuff makes me want to start using my pinhole again. (I’ve been very lazy about using it.) Especially these shots of Tokyo Tower, St. Pat’s Cathedral in New York, and the Great Wall of China (and another shot of what the setup of that shot looked like). Fantastic.

Anybody else think that Buell’s design #10 looks an awful lot like a certain spacecraft we all know and love?

Interesting. Probably some sort of copyright violation, but still a little bit cool.

Worth at least 13,000 words

Neatorama’s got a great piece, reprinted from Mental Floss magazine, on 13 Photographs That Changed the World.

I don’t know if I could pick out just 13. I’d probably need at least 25. Or maybe 150. I’m very bad at whittling these things down. But the 13 photos featured above are all excellent choices.

And speaking of former HDers…
