Well, poo.

Vaclav Havel will leave his office as Czech president on Sunday.

Now if we can only get our president to follow suit…

Side effects may include… um… something. I forgot.

Found this over on Davezilla this morning. It’s a new patch. Can’t we just get him one that administers a little shock when he says “nucular”?

Frosty goes on strike

On my way to work every morning, I pass a condo construction site. Across the street from the site is a group of contractors picketing for a labor dispute they’re involved in.

Last night, we had a little bit of snow. This morning, I noticed that the guys picketing had built themselves a snowman and given him a sign to carry. I had to smile.

The Mystery Science Theatre 3000 Catchphrase Catalog. Yay!! (Or should I say “Hi-Keeba!”)

Poorly-written captions from a bootleg copy of The Two Towers. They just get better as you get farther into the movie.

Oh, come on. Let him pass.

This just seems so unfair. The poor guy’s gonna have to retake his driving exam. Of course, after this, he’ll probably never want to drive again anyhow…

Now will you hang up and drive?

Tuesday, January 28th, 2003 | General | No Comments

See — you do drive like an idiot when you’re talking on a cell phone. Now quit yappin’ and get back to watching the road.

Have you seen Stanley?

Those bastards! Stealing a Lego Stanley Cup. Give ‘em the chair, I say!

On the plus side, it looks like there will be Lego hockey sets, so all is not lost. These are a few of my favorite things, eh.

In related news, I got to kiss Stanley and you didn’t. Nyahh nyahh. (Wish we’d had the Cup minder take a second photo, though. This one’s a bit blurry.)

If it’s going to pre-empt NYPD Blue, at least it can be entertaining

The State of the Union drinking game. We’re all gonna be soooo drunk.

Slow news day

Friday, January 24th, 2003 | General | No Comments

I’ve got nothin’ for you today. Kind of slow around here. Whatever drives interesting news is probably frozen to something. But hey, at least the wind chill is down. Or is that up? How do you phrase that when it dips into the negative numbers? Ahhh, Wisconsin in the winter. What fun.

Mind you, not everyone in the state has been so idle. This moron in Kenosha found a new and inventive way of stalking his ex-girlfriend. How charming.

Everyone should go over to visit the Leptard and say hi to his new little niece. Cute kid, and she’s got a fine name (even if it is in the wrong order and Anne is misspelled).

Kind of a busy weekend planned. Going out to Gil’s for dinner tonight (yum!), Jon’s band has a show tomorrow night (their site is still out of date, but the pix of Jon are back up, so I’ll be nice and link to it), and there’s some rumor about a football game of some kind on Sunday.

I’ll try to get some fun links for you for next week. Meantime, have a great weekend all. Stay warm.

cc not exactly a carbon copy

Wednesday, January 22nd, 2003 | General | No Comments

File this one under “hmmm.” Looks like cc, the world’s first cloned kitten, isn’t exactly a carbon copy of her mom. Oh, sure, they have the same coloring, but their calico patterns are quite different and they have different body types. (Scroll down for her baby pic. Awww.)

So does this mean that if I clone my cats, one of them might turn out to be normal? How about just one who’s not fascinated with the echo her howl makes in the bathtub when everything’s quiet in the apartment during the middle of the night? That’d be ok, too.

(Thanks to coworker Dan for the tip on the kitties.)

Anybody else hungry?

I was over checking out the Bloggie Awards nominees earlier today. Found out I was not the only person who dreamt about cereal last night. Zalary over at Everything Falls did as well. Must be something in the air over North America.

Very odd dream. I was in a shop that specialized in foreign groceries (I think they were supposed to be Irish & British, as there was one bottle of IRN-BRU left and I was very happy to be the one to snag it) and there were a couple huge old refrigerator cases totally stocked with cereals. Most were cereals we had here (Corn Flakes, Frosted Mini-Wheats, etc.) but in slightly altered packaging (mostly altered by the addition of a black frame around the box and extra “u”s in some words). However, there were a few cereals that were different. One was some hideous thing that was essentially giant chocolate donuts with chocolate frosting and colored sprinkles. I remember saying very sarcastically to the person next to me in the dream, “Oh, how nice. So now kids can have some nice healthy donuts with their donuts.” Another was a box of cereal called “Banana Puddings” that was little vanilla-waferish spoon shaped cereal pieces with a little banana pudding-flavored marshmallow jauntily attached in the bowl of the spoon. It was $4.54/box (I have no idea why) and I remember thinking that I had to get some for Jon. (I can kind of explain that — he has a Southern Culture on the Skids “Banana Puddin’” poster in his kitchen.)

(Linus, I shudder to think how your friend would interpret this dream.)

Anyhow… I woke up craving Lucky Charms and Quisp. About 15 minutes later, I desperately wanted some Kaboom. Sigh. If only I could find the Kaboom around here, I’d be in business.

Little instigators from Ohio

“Brainwashed by six newcomers from Ohio, 46 penguins at the San Francisco Zoo have abandoned their burrows and embarked on a great migration —

except their pool is not exactly the coast of South America and there’s really nowhere for them to go.”

See — this is what happens when people spend too much time indoors during our long winters here in Wisconsin. Was there sufficient difficulty with these foods to warrant the invention of this device? Didn’t think so.

Kinda makes me want to cook up some popcorn, though.

Apparently I can’t get enough of the photos lately

Found a couple more interesting photography and image-related sites I thought I’d pass along. The first is the NY Public Library’s digital image database, Image Gate. Extremely well done and very comprehensive site. You can get straight to the collections through this page.

The second site is “One at a Time” by Chris Usher. He uses an old Polaroid camera and manipulates the still-processing chemicals with various tools to produce little individual works of art. They’re really quite stunning.

“Which is Worse” is back…sort of

It’s sort of ceased to be a weekly activity and now only gets posted when we’re feeling creative or bored. This installment is:

1) Ascots?
2) Dickies?

And on the serious side…

Normally I try to keep things light here, but I think this needs mentioning. The American Red Cross is reporting critical blood shortages across the country. January is normally a slow period for them, but this year is worse than normal.

If you can donate, please do. They could really use your help right now. Call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE to find a donation center near you.

So you think you know the Simpsons?
