All Quiet on the Midwestern Front.

Friday, November 21st, 2003 | General | 6 Comments

Gonna be pretty quiet around here until the first week of December, I’m afraid. I’ll be off enjoying myself thoroughly on a vacation instead of the usual sitting in front of a computer, working and trying to find interesting links for the lot of you. Yes, it’ll be hard, but I’m sure I’ll find a way to get through it all.

So, until then, everyone have a lovely Thanksgiving (if’n you’re so inclined to celebrate that day).

Linus, we’re on our way. Begin gathering the merry makers. Brendan, you may want to hide your phone.

When science learnin’ pays off.

Finally, an answer to one of the great unanswered questions of the universe.

Actually, there’s the answer to another question at the bottom of the page, as well.

Um, thanks.

Actual comment from a coworker moments ago:

“Thanks, Anne. You’re swell. You’re made of swell juice.”

Damn straight. I think.

Ooh. Pretty.

I think I have a new favorite photo site — fantasyjackpalance. (Hint: Click the site name in the upper right corner to access the photos.) Great photos, nice e-cards, one of the best privacy policies I’ve ever read, and more.

Plus, he likes kitties and Apples, so he must be an ok guy.

WTC Memorials.

Finally — someone’s come up with a WTC memorial that I actually like. It’s nice to know there’s one designer left in the world who understands that a memorial does not need to be hideously overstated. It’s simple, tasteful and still leaves plenty of opportunity to use the surrounding real estate.

This one’s not bad, either.

Full listing of all the memorial entries here.

Ewww. Yarf.

Heard about this new Jones Soda product on NPR the other day. The current question in our office right now: Which is worse — having this stuff be carbonated or not carbonated?

Personally, I think we could have stopped at “having this stuff”, because really I think this just qualifies as “worst” so there’s no need for the contest.

Things that make me happy.

(Warning: Angel semi-spoiler)

Anyone else really, really enjoy watching Spike kick Angel’s ass last night? Long time coming, that.

Feel better about the stealing.

If you’re feeling guilty about all the mp3s you’ve downloaded, here’s a way to make yourself feel better.

Read it and weep, boys.

Got e-mail today from Jenna Jameson.

Oh, sure, she was trying to sell me Home Magazine (maybe they’ve got a new “home video” section?), but still…

Gotta love spammers.

Actually, I’ve been saving up the entertaining spam names I’ve gotten. Here’s a sampling of some of the better ones:

Al Einstein (for memory tips, natch)
Brain Allison
Charity Slaughter (sounds like an evil fundraising event)
Dagobert Pegeen
German Ferguson
Hester Peacock
Ivory Hammer (sounds like a rapper or a bad wrestler)
Marva Albert (no relation, apparently)
Moon-unit Merv
Mr. Pentium
Numbers Christensen
Obedience Julianna
Ziraili Zoltan

Someone’s having a good time thinking these up, I see.

More good neighbor stories.

So Sunday night around 8, I’m hangin’ out on the couch, making a puzzle and watching something or other on TV when my door buzzer sounds. Now, it’s pretty rare that anyone just drops over at my place, much less so on a Sunday night, so I toddle down to see who it could be. Get to the front door, and see a cop in the lobby. Hmm. I open the door for him and he says, “Are you the person who called?” I tell him no, so he asks if my name is [blah, blah, name of neighbor] and I say, “Oh, no — she’s upstairs” and let him in. He tells me that he’s responding to a call placed by one of my neighbors about “the two gentlemen wearing black, lurking around everyone’s front yards.”

He pauses, waiting to see if I’ll put two and two together. I do and we have a good laugh over it before he heads upstairs to discuss it with my neighbor.

Yes, that’s right — I live with people who call the cops on Mormons. (That’ll teach ‘em to lurk, eh?)

Vote early, vote often.

Hooray! A political party and a presidential candidate I can get behind! All hail Johnny Bacardi and his Free Beer! Party.

Now, on to the issues: Candidate Bacardi, if elected, just how much free beer are we entitled to?

Hi, Mom.

Don’t forget — lunar eclipse on Saturday night. Should look something like this, except far slower. Peaks around 7pm CST.

Maybe if we just buy one and put it in Iraq…

Our nickles are about to get ugly. Let’s hope the 2005 design is less contrived.

Bring back the buffalo, I say. Who doesn’t love buffalo?

Ran over to the local mall food court for lunch. On the way out, I passed a store window displaying Care Bear matrioshka dolls.

Eeesh. Hideous.
