Yay for us.

Monday, January 31st, 2005 | Life in Czeltistan | No Comments

I’m really sleepy today (last night was a sick kitty night), so you’ll have to muster your own enthusiasm here, but I just found out that the building in which I work has won an Urban Design Award from the mayor’s office.

Warning for those of you on a slow connection, the “Photographs of all winners” aren’t so much photographs as they are PDFs, and unnecessarily large-ish ones at that. (Helpful hint if you choose to design a web page: If you’re going to make someone download something, it’s nice to warn them first. Duh.)

You can all wave to me if you choose to download our PDF (we’re the Mercantile Building). My desk is on the 2nd floor (that’s 1st floor for you European types), four windows in from the right side. Pretend I’m there waving back to you. (I’m not, of course. That would require that the walls around my cube be lowered enough for me to see out the window, but we can all pretend.)

Oh, and the building you see just to the left of us in the main PDF photo is the building we moved here from a year ago.

Ok. That’s all I’ve got for today. I have to run off to my vet now and pick up kitty’s antibiotics.

Lemme guess — you used a Pentium?

Well, one thing I recall is how to correctly do division.

Good job on the proofing, MSN.

And maybe some ice cream.

One of my coworkers said to another, “Hey, can I share something with you?”

I pointed out to her that no one ever says that and then brings something fun, like cake. It’s always more work or a subtle criticism of something you’ve just spent three days working on.

I dunno about you guys, but I think we should change that.

And speaking of my Mac…

…she needs a name. Doesn’t necessarily need to be a female name, either. (I still refer to my old Mac as “she” and her name is Keyser Soze.) I’m kind of stuck. I can think up a zillion good pet names and I’ve managed some good band names, but nothing hard drive-worthy is springing to mind.

Any ideas?

A little something for those of you in warmer climates.

I’m not seein’ the 38″ of snow, but we’ll just let them slide on that one. They seem to have enough other winter fun to deal with. We’re a bit snowier here than in the photo above, but at least I can still see the side of my house.

Happy birthday, little Mac…

Gonna have to take my computers out for a drink this evening. The Mac turns 21 today (scroll down for the English version).

I just know that both of my machines are whiskey drinkers. They’ve got that look about them. Plus, it’s the only thing I have in the house, so if they’ve been sneaking any, that’s what they’ve been gettin’.

I worry about internet users

The #7 search term for my blog for this past week is for “bacon scented candles.”

I kid you not.

In case any of you are looking for Steelbuddha, his site’s down for a couple of days for a domain transfer. Despair not, he will return shortly.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled programming.

What if…

Ever wonder how your life would have turned out if certain things had just gone a bit differently? Sure. We all have. Ever make a little chart detailing the ways it could be different? Nope. Me neither. But Craig has, and it’s kind of fun and interesting to play with.

Stupidity, thy name is morning radio shows

Friday, January 14th, 2005 | Life in Czeltistan | 5 Comments

My alarm clock is a clock radio I got for my 8th grade graduation. It’s old, it’s outdated and it’s ceased to be able to efficiently pick up all of the local radio stations. However, it’s still a fine alarm clock and it’s got two alarm settings (set them for 1/2 hour apart and you have to hit the snooze button 2 fewer times!), so I make do with it. While it does get NPR, I know that there’s no way NPR will wake me up in the morning. I need music for that task, so I have to settle on one of the other stations I can actually tune in. The least obnoxious of these is a local urban-pop station. Still irritating, but less so than classic rock, “light jazz” or country.

So anyhow… this morning I happen to wake up as they’re starting the news. One of the stories is about North Korea rejoining the talks on nukes. The rocket scientist the station’s got reading the news actually says the following: “… North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong, the second…”

Yep. Kim Jong, the second.

How big a rock do you have to be living under not to have heard of Kim Jong Il? I mean, I get that in sans-serif type, “II” and “Il” look pretty much the same, but really. And this was the 8:30 newscast. She’d probably been doing this every half hour since 6.

Woke me up right quick, though. Instead of rolling over and begging for 10 more minutes of sleep as I usually do when the alarm goes off, I sat upright and yelled, “Gah! Try watching something besides MTV for a change, you halfwit! Maybe you’ll learn something!” And, of course, after that, I was pretty much awake, so the whole rolling over/10 more minutes thing was out.

Prague, again

The sky is falling!

Wednesday, January 12th, 2005 | Life in Czeltistan | 1 Comment

Our meteorologists must be peeing in their pants with glee these days. They get about half of the newscast airtime to themselves lately. I suspect this month’s editorial directive goes something like this: “No one in the metro area seems to be panicking over anything stupid right now. And we’re getting way too much national news coverage into our reports every night. Anyone got anything to remedy that?”

Last week Wednesday: The snow is coming! The snow is coming! We’ll all be buried alive!
Today: Flood watch! Oh, the humanity! (You laugh, but it got twice as much coverage last night — the night before it’s even supposed to happen — than did the tsunami relief updates and California mudslides news combined.)

You’d think we’d never seen weather swings like this around here before. (Hello! We live in Wisconsin, a state whose unofficial motto is “If you don’t like the weather, give it a minute. It’ll change.”) I’m sure tonight’s news will include a special half-hour segment on how even though today’s high was 45, it’s only going to get up to 5 on Friday. (Egads! What shall we do?? Oh, wait — I know! I’ve heard tell of this fabulous new clothing designed specially for colder temperatures! Perchance we shall find a merchant in the area who carries some.)

I’ve got to stop forgetting to change the channel when the news comes on.

She makes with the funny

I think I need to add The Midwestgrrl to my links. I can’t remember how I stumbled upon her blog, but I keep going back and gosh darn it, I think you should go there too.

She reminds me a lot of me, but if I was sitting a little farther east and was much better at being funny about things. She’s also a much more prolific blogger than I am. (But then hey, who isn’t these days? And if I wasn’t such a big slacker, I could welcome her to the links with a shiny new template. However, I slack, and so I can’t.) (And no, Brendan. No mermaids.)

Monday fun

Monday, January 10th, 2005 | Life in Czeltistan | No Comments

Y’know what’s really awesome on a Monday morning? Getting in to work and finding out the heat isn’t working. Brrrr! I thought about going home to get my skis, just in case it snowed, but there’s just too much work to do.

More fun: About midway through this morning, the third floor also had no electricity. So it could have been worse. At least here on 2 we still had light. (Well, everyone but me. The bulb in my task lamp blew this morning. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised, as I’ve used this lamp for 6+ years and I’m sure someone used it before me, so the bulb probably has had one foot in the grave for ages. Still, I think the technology was trying to tell me something. I’m pretty sure that something was “You shouldn’t have gotten out of bed.”)

On the plus side, I should hand out cigars all around. The new iBook was ordered today. I’m a new Mac mommy once again! (Yes, I know Expo is tomorrow and that they’ll probably bump the speed on all of the machines and now they’ll come with 6 zillion kick-ass new bells & whistles, but that’s ok. This machine is perfect for my needs and it came with a free printer. I won’t argue if it doesn’t also come with a pony.)

Feel better, SB.

Speedy recovery wishes to Steelbuddha, who had surgery to remove his wisdom teeth yesterday.

Don’t worry, SB — we do not think you any less wise without your fangs. Enjoy your good dental drugs and your quality time spent with World of Warcraft.

Can we revise the quarter?

Thursday, January 6th, 2005 | You Call This News? | 1 Comment

Huh. Looks like we’ve got ‘roos running around up here. Cute, but they’re not real good in snow. Poor little thing. But I’m glad they got him over to Vilas Zoo where he can stay warm. Maybe Vilas will send him over here so he can hang out with his relatives at our zoo.

So… um… is it too late to change the quarter? I mean, a kangaroo is waaaaaay more interesting than a cow, corn & cheese. And really, no other states have wild kangaroos. (Ok, so technically we don’t either. But we did for a little while. I think that should count.)

Hooray! Shin-deep, fluffy, white stuff all over the ground! Now if only I could get out of here before dark so I could go ski.

Ah, well. I’ll ski Saturday.

Again with the short posts

I had this great plan that I would crank through all of my work today and still have time to write an entry. However, like all other plans I have this week, it isn’t working out so well. I’m nowhere near being through with my work and now I’m an hour late to a 2-hour-long event I need to get to. So you, dear readers, will just have to be patient a bit longer.

However, I’d just like to say that Spam Karma is my new favorite thing. In the last 24 hours, it’s nuked 212 spam comments, thus making both me and my ISP much, much happier. Thanks, Dr. Dave! You rock.

Resolution: To get less comment spam

Monday, January 3rd, 2005 | Bloggity goodness | 1 Comment

No time to write today, but I did install Spam Karma, so let’s hope that cuts down on the comment spam I’m getting beaten with lately. (75 per day? I think that’s a bit ridiculous.)

Hopefully an update tomorrow.
