Happy whatever, y’all

Friday, December 23rd, 2005 | Life in Czeltistan | 2 Comments

The interweb connection at home is still down (again, don’t ask. I’m told it’ll be back soon. If it were actually my own connection, I’d probably be fairly pissed by now. But at the price I pay for grifting off my neighbor’s connection, I can’t complain), so I don’t know when I’ll be posting next. I’ll try to poke my head in some time before the new year, but let’s not hold our breath on that one.

So you all have a lovely whatever-it-is you celebrate and a fantastic new year. All you folks who will be travelling, do so safely.

Happy happy, merry merry, etc.

That’s the spirit!

I heard a Leonard Cohen song come up on the studio’s stereo here at work and it made me think of this fantastic blog entry of Vidiot’s from last April. (And yes, it was the same song on the stereo, and yes, I was wishing I knew m@’s revised lyrics so I could sing along.)

For all you procrastinators out there, Matthew Baldwin helps you find some last-minute gifts.

And actually, I could kinda use that cat barf sign. I’ll just make it into a little saddle for Princess Barfs-a-lot.

Fabulous weekend, Great news

Hi internets. Happy Monday.

Ok. So no one’s really happy it’s Monday. But I had a fantastic weekend, so I’m less cranky about this Monday than most other Mondays. (I’m sure that good mood will wear off sometime in the next few hours. Don’t worry.)

I went to a very last-minute holiday party at M-80 and out for some food and cocktails with some friends on Friday. Bridget from M-80 is freakishly psychic about when my freelance checks come in. I swear she called about the party 10 minutes after it was handed to me. So, of course, I bought some art. I now have a lovely rubber duckie painting (to go with my rubber duckies, of course) in my bathroom, and a lovely sock monkey “Happy Holidays” silkscreen poster. Yes! More art.

Got woken up a little earlier than I’d have liked on Saturday morning, but it was by my brother, calling to tell me I’d be an aunt in June, so I’m willing to let it slide. In case you missed that, let me run it by you again: Me. An aunt. In June. I’m *thisclose* to running out and buying little hockey skates now.

Spent the remainder of the day baking Xmas cookies with Mom (gingerbread. mmmmm.) and then going to the annual Mighty Reindeer Lick Christmas show. Wish I’d brought the camera. Had I know original guitarist Dan Franke would be flying in from Austin for the evening, I sure would have. Dammit. When am I ever without my camera? *sigh*

Closed out the weekend Sunday with an Admirals win, followed by a skate on the Bradley Center ice.

So to review, the weekend was a blur of art, a party, cookies, good music, hockey, skating and finding out I get to corrupt a young mind. Excellent.

Ooh. Want.

I may have to bust out the Christmas tree this year, just so I can make and hang some of these Mac ornaments.

What a fantastic idea: Turning a parking space into a 2-hour park.

While people looking for a parking spot were probably less-than-thrilled, I think it’s a fantastic idea and it looks like a bunch of people got some enjoyment out of the temporary green space.

You rock, Tom

OnMilwaukee.com has a very nice article on WMSE station manager, Tom Crawford. In addition to being a really nice guy (and not at all scary, considering he’s a very big man with many, many tattoos), he’s second-to-none in the city for his commitment to local music. We could use a lot more like him.

A Very Deerlick Christmas

Milwaukee-area denizens: The Mighty Deerlick’s annual Christmas show (as The Mighty Reindeer Lick, natch) is this Saturday at Points East Pub at 10pm. Nick Pipitone and the 4 Forces of Evil are playing as well.

It’s just what Santa ordered.

Gah! My eyes!

Ugly Christmas Lights

This year’s insanity begins here.

The local electric companies love these people. I, however, am a bit of a Grinch when it comes to garish Christmas lights. Simple, understated lights = ok. An overabundance of lights and decorations that do any of the following: flash, chase, inflate, make noise = JIHAD!

I’m willing to make an exception for Candy Cane Lane, because a) I don’t have to look at it and b) I can’t really go declaring a jihad against people who raise money to fight childhood cancer, now can I? (Don’t actually answer that.)

Mr. Fish, I *heart* you

I’m frequently on the Harper’s site, so I’m not sure how I missed this. Thankfully, Steelbuddha found it and brought it to my attention.

Seventh anniversary at work today. My, oh my.

I made 7-layer bars for the occasion. Well, that and to confound my coworkers who likely think I’m under the impression that my oven is only for frozen pizzas and food that comes in a box.

Apparently you can do other things with it, too. Who knew?

Ok. That’s all of ‘em.

The rest of the photos are up. Again, the set’s here. If you’re viewing them as I upload them, we left off here. (Linus, you’re in these. And SB loved his shoutout.)

Ok. I’ve gotta run now, lest I be late for my first hockey game in a month. I’m jonesin’.

Internet’s still down at home, so no updates ’til Monday. Later, gators. (Did I just say that? I’m blaming the cold medicine.)

More photos. Lots more photos.

I’ve posted another 3 or so days’ worth of photos. Convenient set from the trip can be found here. For those of you looking to start where you left off yesterday, start with this one.

Still more to come. I’m just tired today and want to go home to see if I can shake this would-be cold. (Dear virus attempting to attack my system, You will fail. I have no time this month for illness. Moose kisses, Czeltic Girl.) I’ll try to post the rest of the photos tomorrow.

Can you imagine the fun the marketing team for the banana bunker is having?

A little something to tide you over

Wednesday, December 7th, 2005 | Life in Czeltistan | 2 Comments

The first two days’ worth of photos are up, give or take a few. I’m a little slow in getting these things up, as my internet’s down at home (don’t ask) and it’s been busy at work. I’m hoping to have more up tomorrow, and actually get around to putting them all in a nice convenient set for you to browse through. In the meantime, the photos from the first stay in Dublin start here.

Enjoy.

Serenity: Abridged

For those too lazy to sit through Serenity or who just need a quick refresher on the movie, The Hand Puppet Movie Theatre brings you Serenity – Emergency Naptime Procedures Implemented”.

It’s brilliant. But remember, for those of you who haven’t yet seen the flick and are planning to, it’s chock full o’ spoilers, albeit in hand-puppet form.

Way to go, Trek team

The Trek Bikes site Hanson Dodge created is Macromedia’s Site of the Day today. Don’t look at me, though. I did absolutely nothing on that site this year. Nada. But our pal Steelbuddha may have had a hand in it.

Burninate!

Man, the Swedes get all the good Christmas traditions.

That said, I’m soooooo done with Christmas this year. Actually, I was already sick of it by Dec. 1. Next year, I’m really thinking of leaving the country for the holiday. Maybe I’ll go to Sweden and watch them burn the goat. And then I’ll hide until the holiday is done. That seems like a solid plan.

We’re back

Christyl & I have returned to the States. As soon as I get my brain settled back in, I’ll post about the trip and get the photos online. (Oh, and there are photos.)

Meantime, I’ll leave you with this little tidbit: When the alarm went off this morning, the news & weather were on. The DJ said “It’s 3 degrees out right now.” I thought “Oh, sweet. It’s kind of warm then.” And then I realized it was 3 degrees Fahrenheit, not 3 degrees Celcius. Dammit.

Part 2, in which karma catches up

Y’know all those times we’ve been to Ireland and it hasn’t rained? Well, Ireland is doing its best to make up for that on our last day here.

Perhaps my Chuck Taylors were not the wisest choice of footwear for today.
