All are doing well and she made it in plenty of time to see the evening’s fireworks.

Is that a chair around your neck?

I don’t get super excited about Eames stuff lately (except that Powers of 10 video), just ‘coz their stuff is suddenly everywhere and frankly, I’m getting sick of seeing it, but this little Eames chair necklace is pretty cool. I think I want it.

If only this artist would make a toaster necklace, I’d be in heaven.

Things I’ll likely be heard to say while visiting my brother’s new offspring when it arrives tomorrow:

  • “Yep, sure is a human!”
  • “Are they supposed to be all wrinkly like that?”
  • “A week and a half late. Well, there’s no doubt it belongs to this family.”
  • “Thanks, you guys. Now the folks have a grandkid and I didn’t have to hatch it!”

And the one my sister-in-law will especially love:

  • “She’s gonna make a helluva hockey player.”

Sightseeing with Fred

Fred Willard seems like he’d be an interesting guy to hang out with. I’d have loved to have been on this tour of Manhattan with him. Sounds like he knew where all the good stuff was.

Great Photographers on the Internet

I *love* photography sites. Absolutely hate the ones that allow critiques of the photos. The site above aptly demonstrates why. (The commentary on the Steichen photo alone is fantastic.)

(Photo buffs, check out the rest of The Online Photographer’s site. He’s got some wonderful posts and links. This one completely made my day.)

Almost time for blog kindergarten

Saturday, this li’l ol’ blog turns 4. That’s like 28 in dog years. Ok, no it’s not. That whole 1 year for humans = 7 years for dogs thing isn’t exactly how it works. (It’s more like 10.5 years for the first two years, then 4 years every year thereafter. So this blog’s really 29.) (Are you confused yet?)

I’ll be out doin’ stuff on Saturday, not hangin’ around here, wearing silly paper hats and baking a cake for my blog or something silly like that. So we’re celebrating a day early. (No, I’m not wearing a silly paper hat on Friday either.)

Thanks, y’all for stopping by all these years. I had no idea anyone would actually come seek out my ramblings, and yet here you are. Gives my heart all sorts of warm fuzzies.

This one is frighteningly accurate, though the yellow section may be a bit small.

(Thanks, BB, for the fabulous tip!)

I’ve never really been a fan of diamonds, but this story on New York’s Diamond District is some pretty interesting reading. I bet the tour is actually quite entertaining.

Still no niecephew

Wikipedia’s wonderful List of Problems Solved by McGyver

And can I just say how much I like that debit MasterCard ad that uses McGyver? All commercials should be such fun.

Taking bets now

The niecephew is due on Monday. (And, as if to spite my poor sis-in-law, Wisconsin has decided that 90 and humid is an appropriate forecast for the weekend.) So get your guesses in now as to when the little critter’s flight will arrive.

I’m secretly holding out for Thursday, as we all know that birthdays that occur on the 22nd of a month are the coolest birthdays of all. In reality, though, I’m guessing the little one will be pretty close to on time. Probably on Tuesday, just ‘coz that’s the only day so far next week that I have plans for the evening. Big events always happen on the only days I already have things planned.

I’m such a geek

Woke up in the middle of the night the other night. Looked at the clock. It read 4:04. Thought to myself, “Sleep not found.” Rolled over and went back to sleep.

Congrats to the Hershey Bears on their Calder Cup victory last night. Wish it could have been the Admirals holding up that cup instead, but whatcha gonna do? Making it to game 6 of the finals is no small feat. The Ads should be proud of themselves. (And ending the season in mid-June is sooooo much better than ending it in April.)

So now I wander about, slightly confused for a few weeks, wondering what to do without hockey. And then Irish Fest prep and the festival itself hits. And then fall comes (and I do so enjoy when it’s fall and not summer any more). And then, before you know it, it’s hockey season again. (Hooray!)

Mr. Toast

My goodness. How did I miss Mr. Toast?? He’s fantastic!

There are even Mr. Toast dolls! I must have one!

For added enjoyment, check out Mr. Toast’s creator’s site, A Sampler of Things. Lots of retro design fun there. Good stuff.

Can’t Stop the Serenity

Monday, June 12th, 2006 | Joss Whedon-y Goodness | 2 Comments

I think the site’s description says it all:

Joss Whedon’s Serenity on the big screen.
On Joss Whedon’s birthday.
To benefit Joss Whedon’s favorite charity, Equality Now.

Info on all planned screenings (US and international) can be found at Can’t Stop the Serenity. Info on the Milwaukee-area screening (which will be held on June 22, not June 23) can be found at this site. Prices are a little higher than normal movies, but remember — the extra is going to charity, and there will be some giveaways. Besides, it’s worth it to see that beautiful little ship on a big screen again.

Dumbest question I was asked all weekend:

“You went to Pride Fest this weekend? Were there [audible pause as he wrapped his brain around this obviously disdainful idea] gay people holding hands and stuff?”

Second dumbest question, asked by the same person, moments later: “Were the women constantly hitting on you?”

Keeping me guessing

Dear My Immune System,

Ok. Ha ha. Very funny.

Moose kisses,

So last week, I find myself in the grip of the mother of all UTIs (overshare. sorry). Fine. Ok. Time to see the doc. Doc prescribes a sulfa-based antibiotic, which is something I’ve never had before. I’m willing to give it the old college try. Half the fun of finding drug allergies is, well, finding out you have the drug allergy.

After a few days on the drug, no hives, no other side effect symptoms, everything seems normal. Huzzah! Add one to the list of things I can actually take. (and there was much rejoicing…)

Fast forward to a week later. Hmm. My lymph nodes are swollen and I have a slight fever. Time to see the doc again, just to be sure it’s not an allergy. Doc runs various tests. No visible allergic reaction. No strep throat. Probably just got hit with one of the lovely viruses that’s going around. Sent home with another prescription for antibiotics to fix the UTI, which still is not gone (did I mention it was truly evil?), and an order to up my dosages of vitamin C and zinc and drink plenty of fluids. Check. Already all over that last one.

Get home, resume taking antibiotics, head off to deal with my day.

Fast forward 20 hours later to 5am Saturday. Find myself having some weird dream that sort of ties in the X-Men 3 flick I saw last night and something about a plague that causes horrible itching. Slowly come to realization that itching is actually in real life as well. Wake up and find hives on several parts of my body.

Seriously? So, what? You just decided to wait a week and one day and until after I’d make the second doc appointment to make yourself visible, dear allergic reaction?

Guess I’ll be visiting my clinic’s new urgent care center today. Just how I wanted to kick off the weekend. I have plans, dammit, and “find the Benadryl” is not one of them.

Update: Yup. According to the doc and the hives that now cover 90% of my body, I am, in fact, allergic to sulfa drugs. Yay, me!
