Blast from the past

Keith over at Malls of America has a post on Northridge Mall. Man, did we spend the hours there as teenagers. Not only did it have the closest first-run theatre to Grafton, but it also gave us some place to hang out, sans parents, where the parents didn’t worry about us (and potentially forbid us to go). So we were there A LOT. God only knows how we managed to fill all our time there. The thought of spending that much time in a mall now makes me twitch. But back then, it was just the thing to do. (We didn’t have cable. We had to make our own fun.) I do remember seeing Aliens at the cinema there 5 times and seeing a ton of other movies, especially when they had the Tuesday pricing deals. And I remember a lot of just sitting around outside the Forenza store and JR’s Records. Ah, youth.

Woman standing in front of a table with 5 kinds of FREE beer: “Don’t you have anything more… manageable for the non-beer drinkers?”

Lady, it’s free. Do not ask for special treatment. The only two correct things to say to the bartender are 1) “Yes, I’d love a free beer.” or 2) “What a nice surprise — free beer.”

It’s big. Really, really big.

Alaska, superimposed over the contiguous 48 states.

Alaska ate my state. And a whole bunch of others.

This Constantinople print is gorgeous.

Abandoned sites of Japan

Lovely photos of urban decay in Japan. The site’s not in English (except some of the navigation. go figure), but the photos speak for themselves. The button on the right at the bottom of each page leads you to the next page in the gallery.

Unusual Hotels of the World. For those of you who fancy lodging in a giant beagle, tree houses (I think a coworker actually stayed in these), a floating underwater aquarium, wildlife reserve, a former prison, or any other of a number of out-of-the-ordinary places, this is the site for you.

The wilderness-y sites do next-to-nothing for me, but most of the other locations actually look like they’d be great fun to stay in.

BB, this one made me think of you.

Famous logos, if they’d been done for Web 2.0

The FedEx one needs a little “now do you see the arrow?” tagline with it. :)

If the story is about how medication errors are responsible for injuries and deaths, perhaps that’s not the ad you want to run.

Gotta love the robots.

It’s just what I wanted

Looks like I’ll be getting what I want most every year for my birthday: Cool temperatures. Low 70s on Friday (oh, if only I could have taken my b-day day off this week!), and mid-70s on my b-day. Happy, happy, happy.

I’m just confused by the meteorologist saying “it’ll be cloudy” as if that’s a bad thing. Big, round, orange thing in the sky = bad.

And, thanks to Festa, there are fireworks every night, all weekend long. Those Bartolottas. They bring out the big guns for the Festa shows.

A conversation I had yesterday with a coworker:

Coworker: Hey, is Irish Fest this weekend?
Me: Nope. Third weekend in August. Festa Italiana is this weekend.
Coworker: Really? ‘Coz I saw some people who looked Irish walking around down here today.
Me: Ok.
Coworker: They were wearing knickers.

(And no, UK & Irish folks. Not those knickers. Short pants, not underpants. Lordy. Here comes the spam.)

So, um… if they looked like this, go with “Italian.” If they looked like this, go with “golfer” (acceptable secondary answer: “Scot”). But certainly not the Irish.

Not funny, Amazon

“Charles in Charge” was in my recommendations.

Bad Amazon. Bad!

Must everything have a cutesy name now?

I decided to forego my usual summer practice of hiding in the air conditioning in order to walk over to the Westown Farmer’s Market at lunch. The lure of $3 bunches of flowers was strong, considering the crazy week I’m having.

Usually when I’m there, I walk past the potted plant vendors and the ones selling herb plants. (Not that I don’t love herbs. I’m just not so much a gardener.) On a whim today, though, I decided to walk through the aisles of herbs in hopes of finding a stevia plant. Mom’s plant didn’t make it this year, so I needed to go elsewhere to get my fix. And, it seems the herb gods smiled upon me — the vendor had about a dozen stevia plants. Woo hoo!

When I went to pay for the stevia, the woman asked “What do you have there?” I replied, “Stevia.” She said, “You mean ’sugarplant’?” I replied, “Well, you call it what you like, but it’s stevia.”

Oh, and then — with a straight face and all — she asked me “So are you familiar with the sugarplant?”

Um… considering I know it’s real name, I’m gonna go with “Yeah.”

Mom reported something similar after her last trip to Stein’s. She said many of the lesser-known herbs now had cute little names instead of their proper names.

Why? Why are we dumbing this down? Are people really so stupid these days as to not have the ability to learn a new name for something? What’s next — start giving cute, descriptive names to more common plants? Ok. I’ll start. From now on, tomatoes will be known as “pizza fruit.”

Oh, I’m totally getting myself a couple of this outfit in different colors. Who wouldn’t want to wear that one every day? Ok, maybe something a little more casual for weekends.

I’m melting

I almost cried from happiness this morning when the nice lady on the radio said that the highs tomorrow near the lake would be in the low- to mid-70s. Yes!

If she’s lying to me, I’ll hunt down the meteorologist who gave her that forecast and ring his neck. Thou shalt not joke with me about the end to extremely hot temperatures.

Boredom = Inspiration

After 4 fairly insane days at work, today was a bit slower. That was nice and all, but the first day after a few hectic ones, and my brain starts to wander, Mostly it keeps thinking things like “wouldn’t it be nice if we weren’t here?” and “why isn’t there more that’s interesting on the internet?” and never really gets around to anything terribly useful. But this afternoon, I came up with a fabulous idea for a Flickr set. It’s possible I’ll start it this weekend, but it’s going to be awfully hot and humid, so it’s more than likely I’ll just sit in front of the air conditioner. Maybe I’ll start the project next week.

(Christyl, you already know what the project is, so no spoilers.)

Let you know when it’s done.

I’m thoroughly addicted to the Daily Dose of Imagery page. His images are wonderful.

Hmm. Think this one needs to get added to the blogroll here so I make sure I don’t miss any days.

Someone’s got girl trouble

I’m just gonna go out on a limb here and guess that the recent search hits for “how to make a girl happy by sayin good stuff to them” and “questions not to ask a girl” led the same poor guy to this li’l ol’ blog.

Good luck, man. Sounds like you’re gonna need it.

Here we go again

Air Expo’s in town this weekend. The first batch of planes just flew over the building at work.

Welcome to 5 days of trying to coax the cats out from under the bed. *sigh*

This is all over by now, but for those of you who don’t spend quite as much time online as others of us (*cough*), I thought I’d post this.
