Have a lovely New Year’s, everyone. I hope 2007 is good to you all.

Have fun in your New Year’s Eve celebrations and be safe.

Doesn’t it just warm the heart?

The Charlie Brown Christmas album was on twice today at work, much to my dismay. I know the rest of the world loves Charlie Brown and Vince Guaraldi, but I’m not a fan. Sitting through the album twice started my annual “how long until the Christmas music is over?” countdown clock. And since I’m being curmudgeonly and making confessions, let me just admit right now that I’m the person in America who is not in any way a fan of “A Christmas Story.” Nope. Not one little bit. I have no idea why everyone else loves it so very, very much and why it has the same effect on me as nails on a chalkboard (which, incidentally, is one noise that actually doesn’t bother me. Go figure.), but it does.

So it got me thinking — are there Czeltistan-approved holiday movies? Answer: Why, yes, Virginia. There are Czeltic holiday favorites: “Nightmare Before Christmas,” “The Ref,” and either of the Christmas-set “Die Hard” films. I’ll also allow “Lethal Weapon,” even though Mel Gibson is batshit crazy. But mostly I just like to stick with films where things explode, or there are aliens, or — best yet — films where aliens explode. These are a few of my favorite things.

And with that, I leave you. Blogging will be sparse, if at all, over the holiday week. I may check in, but most likely I’ll be away until the first week of January. Have yourselves a lovely holiday or holidays of your choice. Be safe in your travels. And I hope the Great Pumpkin brings you loads of goodies.

And since we’re doing Christmas posts

…who have defected to NY, Tim sends along his new studio’s most excellent Christmas movie trailer. I love a good action flick.

Dear NY,

Ok. Ha ha. You got Christina, then you got Tim. But now Justin? Stop taking all our Flash people. Seriously. We need them.

Moose kisses,

Best of luck, Jed. We’ll miss you.

And Christyl, chalk up another visit we need to make in NY. We should just hold a convention.

m@, you still there?

Or are you buried under all that Denver snow? Want us to send out a St. Bernard with some cocktails?

Shhh. Don’t tell her parents.

Dec. 14 is Monkey Day! Had I known, I’d have put up a Monkey Day tree or something.

Is it coincidence that it falls on the same day as my work anniversary? I don’t think so.

Finally, some good news

Many, many congrats to my friend Chris who, after 6 years of hard work, successfully defended her doctoral thesis this Wednesday. Way to go, Doc. You’ve earned it. And yes, we’re going to call you “Doc” until you get sick of it.

I’m like an institution

Today marks my 8th anniversary at work. Now some of you who have been at their jobs longer than that (Parents, I’m looking at you) may think “big freakin’ deal”, but this is me we’re talking about. The restless one. The easily bored. Aside from the home I grew up in, I have never managed to stay in one place this long. (Previous record: 7 years, held last year by this job and my former apartment.) And you know what? I still like it here. Go figure.

And apparently, some very nice things were said about me in Monday morning’s staff meeting by one of the partners. Almost kinda makes me wish I’d woken up earlier to hear it. On second though, nah. Nothing’s better than an extra hour of sleep. But it was nice to hear about what was said all the same. Makes me feel all warm and squishy inside. (Don’t let that get around. It’ll ruin my rep.)

Ok, I’m really starting to not enjoy the news this week

First Leslie Harpold, now Peter Boyle? Dammit.

Boyle was pretty much good in any role he had, but to this day, all I have to do is think about him doing “Puttin’ on the Ritz” as the monster in “Young Frankenstein” and it cracks me right up. I’m sorry I’ll never get to see him in a new role.

Well, now I’m just depressed

Remember that wonderful advent calendar I posted about a little while ago? The one I look forward to every year? Well this was the last one, and it’ll remain unfinished. I found out just a little bit ago that Leslie Harpold, the woman behind them and many other wonderful bits of fun online, has passed away. She was one of the first web “celebrities” I’d heard of and she contributed a lot to what the web is today. I never got a chance to meet her, but I sure am going to miss her.

I just got an email from my aunt and uncle in Florida. Looks like my second-youngest cousin up and got himself engaged.

(He’s been through two tours in Iraq. Marriage should be a walk in the park, I guess.)

Congrats, Justin & Alexis. Now when’s the date?

A couple days late, but still timely

The Design Disease.

Gee, I don’t know anyone who suffers from this. Nope. Nobody. Well, ok… maybe a couple.

Big news day here in Milwaukee

Wednesday, December 6th, 2006 | You Call This News? | 2 Comments

The Falk Corporation manufacturing plant downtown here had a massive explosion this morning around 8am. All reports indicate it was a 10,000 gallon propane tank that blew up. As of now (shortly after 1:30), the casualties stand at 3 dead, 37 injured and an unknown number missing. I feel just horrible for the families of employees there and I’m hoping those casualty numbers don’t go much higher.

On a related note, Palermo’s Pizza, whose plant is next door, sent over workers to help assist dazed employees and help out with the head count. They also fed evacuees and firefighters. So if you’re in the Milwaukee area, next time you’re at the grocery, throw a little business their way. We could use more good corporate neighbors and we should reward the ones we have.

Update, 10pm: Final casualty total: 3 dead, 46 injured. Terrible for those families, but it’s quite amazing it wasn’t much, much worse.

To help your cuffs adapt, I guess

If I were the type who wore cufflinks, I’d be all over these 45 adapter cufflinks. So cool.

Guess I’ll just have to keep hoping the manufacturer makes a matching necklace. (I know the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame sells one, but it’s not quite as nice.)

Welcome to December!

Wednesday: 60 degrees.
Friday: Blizzard. 10″ of snow. 12 degree wind chill. Snow day at work. (Thanks, Tim D! Way to be a cool boss.)

Looks like the snow is almost over. Now if it just gets cleaned up enough for me to drive across town to the Irish Fest Xmas party tonight…

I’m sure my coworkers were happy to be able to crawl back into bed this morning. We went out last night for a good-bye party for the general of our Flash Army, Tim McKee. He’s leaving us for the big city, the second coworker (both working in Flash) who has left us for NYC in the last two months. (Hey, NYC, quit stealin’ my friends.) So best of luck, Tim. We’ll miss you a lot. And Tony, I’ll point him toward the Drunken Smartass Olympics.
