Snow day work day

See — some of us made it in to work on the snow day.

Sometimes you just need to expand the office a little to take advantage of the great weather outside.

Stop the presses

A message to my coworkers

Wednesday, February 6th, 2008 | Uncategorized | 5 Comments

You are all big sissies.* That’s 3″ of snow, not 20″. Get your butts in here and join the dozen or so of us who weren’t afraid to venture outside their houses this morning. Half of you live on or near bus routes, fer chrissake.

Moose kisses,
Those of us who actually came into work

(*People in rural areas and those who had to stay home to take care of little kids who aren’t in school, I will exempt you. In fact, those of you with kids, thank you for staying home with them and not bringing them in here.)

Are they really supposed to use words like “pound”?

Tuesday, February 5th, 2008 | Uncategorized | 11 Comments

From the National Weather Service’s site: “…SEVERE WINTER STORM TO POUND SOUTHERN WISCONSIN…”

Pound? Really? Must we be so dramatic? You’re meteorologists, people, not sad local newscasters. Act like you’ve got some dignity.

Update, 4:15pm: Ok. Now they’re saying 14-20″. So maybe “pound” is correct.

Superbowl ad recap: The short version

The Miller High Life delivery guy dishes on the Superbowl ads.

It’s two minutes long, and the first minute & a half of ad rants are amusing enough, but the last ad review he does is great.

The Brits get all the cool goodies

Monday, February 4th, 2008 | Uncategorized | 4 Comments

I was perusing my contacts’ photos on Flickr the other day and ran across this photo of a box full of goodies, posted by Anne from I Like. I was intrigued, so I followed the link to Matter’s site.

They had a blog post detailing the contents of the first box. Now I wasn’t just intrigued, I was a bit jealous. I want a box full of cool goodies to arrive in my mailbox! Unfortunately for me, it’s UK-only right now. (Foo.)

But I sent them an email saying I thought it was a fun idea and that I wished we had this in the States, too. (‘Coz I need more stuff. Ok, I don’t. But I want more stuff.) Got an email back from them today saying they’ve had quite a bit of US interest and may end up doing a US box “sooner rather than later,” they’re just trying to figure out how to stimulate demand.

Really? Stimulate demand? Have you met Americans? We LOVE free stuff. :) Bring it on.

(Update, Tuesday: Matter’s site is back up.)

Superbowl round-up

1. Woooooo! Ok, really, I didn’t especially care about either team, but I usually root for the underdog in that case, and there’s something about the Patriots that just rubs me the wrong way. So that game was ever-so-lovely.

2. Let’s talk ads.

- Could that Ling-Ling panda ad have been just a little more racist? Eeesh.
- Budweiser: With the exception of the Bud Light wine & cheese party spot, your commercials were incredibly stupid. You may want to consider an agency review.
- The eTrade baby spots: Also stupid. And did we really need to see the thing spit up? Gross. Trust me — you’re not doing much to sell your service to those of us who aren’t particularly fond of children.
- The commercials that I thought were decent this year: Coke’s Carville/Frist spot; Pepsi’s Justin Timberlake spot (I admit it. I laughed at both the mailbox and the TV.); Garmin’s Napoleon ad (just ‘coz I didn’t see the punchline coming); and the Amp “Push It” spot, which was so gross it was amusing.

Well check that out. I have thousands and thousands of new relatives I didn’t know about: Common ancestor for people with blue eyes

(Dear new relatives: No, I don’t have any money for you. Do you have some for me?)
