I hope these people are wildly successful with their renaming efforts.

Day One of Unemployment

Being spent in jammies, eating snacky foods, watching BSG reruns and doing my taxes.

The kicking continues!

You know what’s a really great way to end a week that started with the cat dying?

Getting laid off!

Yay!!! What fun!

In theory, it’s “temporary,” it happened to several other people I work with and I got a severance package. But still. Shock. Anger.

If y’all excuse me, I’m gonna go hide in a cave somewhere for awhile.

Thanks, everyone

Your support has meant a lot. Really. I’m lucky to have such great friends.

We both miss Cliffy a lot, but Norm and I are doing as well as we can. I’m spoiling her horribly and she’s “putting up” with every minute of it. Between Kopp’s custard I’m eating and the treats I’m giving Norm, we’re both gonna need a diet in no time.

This week sucked. A lot.

Thought it’d be enough that I had a crappy week at work. (Don’t ask. Suffice it to say it was a really bad week.) Guess not.

Had to say goodbye to Rishi this morning. Her kidneys have been failing for some time now and it had gotten to the point where she didn’t want to eat any more. It was either keep sticking her with needles to give her fluids and possibly have to force-feed her so I could limp her along for awhile longer, let her slowly starve herself to death, or call the vet and let her go now. It was the most miserable decision I’ve ever had to make, but I couldn’t have her suffering any more.

So goodbye, little Pumpkin Butt. Thanks for being such an awesome cat. I miss you terribly.

Spring, day 2

10-15″ inches of snow expected around here today. Guess I’ll be spending some of my half day off doing some snowshoeing. A Good Friday, indeed.

I notice they don’t say anything about ulcers

You need to hear this speech

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008 | General | 2 Comments

Obama’s fantastic speech from Philadelphia on race and the steps we need to take to get America on the path to a better future.

It’s 37 minutes long, but it’s well worth the time it takes to watch it. Whether or not you’re an Obama fan, this is a speech too important to miss.

Matthew Baldwin’s got a great song lyrics trivia game over at The Morning News today. Seems like it should be a piece of cake (and some questions are), but overall it’s much harder than it looks.

I just finished my first run through it and only have 25 of 50 of the answers. Time to take a second (and likely third) look at the rest of the questions.

Quick tip: Careful where you mouse around on the page. If you mouse over the “Answer” links, the url for the links shows the song and artist. Call it cheating or call it a spoiler, it’s still bad news. So watch your cursor.

Creepy, but cool

Urban exploration photos of Neverland Ranch. Very, very cool. And completely Michael Jackson-free (except for his name appearing on a control panel).

Good morning, hungover people

Can I get you something with green food color? (*snicker*)

(Yes, I’m a St. Patrick’s Day nerd. I stayed in last night. I wisely decided to go have my pints in relative peace and quiet on Sunday evening. And they sure as hell weren’t green.)

I can’t decide if this is brilliant or cruel

PowerPoint Karaoke

The person in front of the room launches into a completely impromptu talk from a PowerPoint slide deck she has never seen before. The results are openly, gleefully absurd.

Sure, the PowerPoint aspect is cruel, but the idea is fantastic. And it can’t be any more torturous than regular karaoke.

(And no, it wasn’t lost on me that a lexicographer wrote this article. She’s got a pretty entertaining blog, too, if you want to check that out.)

Cold = defeated

Now can I have my voice back? I’m tired of sounding like Marge Simpson.

A note to my cold

You may have the upper hand now, little plague, but mark my words, I will defeat you. It’s my respiratory system — flawed as it is — and I will have it back. You can’t hide in there forever.

I make mistakes so you don’t have to

Dumb idea: Taking NyQuil at 3am when you have to get up at 8am.

On the plus side, you’ll sleep like a log.

On the negative side, you’ll continue sleeping like a log through the first 1/2 hour your alarm goes off.

Busy weekend

Thursday, March 6th, 2008 | Uncategorized | No Comments

As I mentioned a couple of posts ago (before all the cat nonsense), it’s St. Pat’s Parade weekend in Milwaukee. I’m around all weekend, but likely won’t be around the computer much, so I won’t get to post again until Monday. I’ll do what I can on checking my email, but it’ll be sparse.

Have a good weekend, y’all. If you’re in the city, stop down at either parade. Wave when the Emerald Society group goes by. I’ll try to wave back.

Catch you Monday.

A semi-relaxing evening at home

Wednesday, March 5th, 2008 | Uncategorized | 2 Comments

Spent the night at home with the girls last night. Cliff’s feeling all kinds of better after her surgery. She spent the evening tearing around the house and being exceptionally chatty, even for her. I think most of what was being said was along the order of “what does a cat have to do to get some food around here?” Meanwhile I spent the evening chasing after the cat to see what she’d just knocked over and saying such things as “get your head out of there,” “no, wine is not for kitties,” “you’ve got a big plate full of food right there,” “hey, that’s my pizza” and “don’t you even think of peeing on that.” Occasionally there was a “hi, Norm. Where have you been all night?” (Hiding from the Cliff Show, I suspect.)

I managed a load of laundry, but ignored all sorts of other things I was supposed to do. Guess that stuff is on tap for tonight. I also caught a bit of election returns (*grumble grumble*), but had to stop watching when one of the morons on CNN said the candidates “were going mano a…womano.” (Seriously? Aaaagh. Maybe you should learn what that phrase actually means.)

Thanks again to everyone for the kitty well wishes. She should be back to her regular ol’ self by the end of the week. At the rate she’s eating, she may well be fat by next week.

Oh, and finally — did anyone hear any football news yesterday? I looked all over but couldn’t find anyone talking about it. (I kid, but in Wisconsin you’d think the end of the world had come about. Yes, Favre will be missed, but sheesh, it’s not like he died. He just retired. The man’s almost 40. Football’s a harsh career at that age. I get it — it’s news. But maybe we could stop short of interviewing grief counselors about it, don’tcha think?) (Wish I were joking about that last one, but sadly, I’m not. Proper TV journalism is dead.)

Your good vibes are magic

THANK YOU, everyone, for all the good wishes and good vibes you sent Cliffy over the last week. Just got the call from the vet. One tooth was saved, one had to go. She made it through ok and is coming out of the anesthesia just fine.

I’m picking her up at 3:30pm. I’m sure she’ll have a few choice meows for me.

Bundle of nerves, party of one

Took Cliffy in to the vet at 8am. Was reminded again how high-risk she is. Vet said she’d call as early as 9am with results.

If I don’t throw up waiting for that call, it’ll be a miracle.
