Weapons-grade cuteness

Get ready to feel all squishy inside and make cute noises.

We saw plenty of baby critters at the zoo yesterday, but really — is there such a thing as too many cute animals? (If you answer anything besides yes, you are incorrect.) Bobcat kittens, orphaned otters, snow leopard kittens… and don’t even get me started on the baby monkeys. CuteOverload has some competition.

(and thanks to mister artwells for the title.)

You’ve seen many of these before, but this site gives a pretty comprehensive glance at the wonderful photos Callie Shell has made of Barack Obama.

(also via NOTCOT. I was doing some catching up on their linkety goodness today.)

300 blocks of signs

New York City Signs: 14th to 42nd Street

Since it is possible to display only a small fragment of these images, the site will contain only a few highlights of the signs in this prolific area. The emphasis is on vintage signs but not exclusively. My earliest photographs date from the mid 1980’s. Many of these signs no longer exist. Documentation is supplied wherever available.

This site makes both the ghost ad lover and NYC history buff in me go “squeeeee!”

Photos of Twin Peaks, then and now.

We tried to do this when we were out there in ‘91. We found most of the main locations and a couple secondary ones. And I can attest that the Mar-T’s (Double-R’s) pie was some damn fine pie. Coffee was pretty good, too, if I remember correctly.

New template. I like it. Official focus group member Jillian likes it. You’ll like it. (Or else.) (Ok. Not “or else.”) And yes, whiners, I’ve joined the 21st century and added RSS.

I’m trying to figure out what to do with the header, so that will likely change at some point. Just the image, though. Not the color. Me likey the color. I have a great idea for the header, but what I no likey is my design/drawing/Photoshop ability. I’m going to have to bribe one of the designers with lovely beverages to see if they can do what I’d like. But for now, it’s gonna be flowers and swirly bits up there.

Ah, crapski. I see my post category tags were wiped out during what I’ve decided to call “the upgrade fiasco.” I’ll start re-categorizing everything. It’ll take some time, so please be patient. (The Republic of Czeltistan really needs some interns to take care of this sort of thing and fetch me the occasional plate of toast. I’ll look into that.)

And we’re back

HUGE thank you to Mr. m@ for all his help getting the Republic of Czeltistan back on the map. I owe you copious amounts of Bun Bars for this, sir.

I’ve still got a lot of sweeping up to do around here, so remember — patience is a virtue. Everything will be back in place soon(ish). I just have to rebuild a few things. But first I need to figure out the new WP admin screens.

Blog update

I’m going to upgrade WordPress on Wednesday, see if that won’t fix some of the issues.

So if you pop by on Wednesday and we’re off the air or things are really wonky, check back in later and everything should be up and running. And yes, whiners (Mosey, I’m mostly looking at you), RSS is coming.

Please stand by

Had some issues with the blog on Friday. Looks like comments are still affected. I’m workin’ on it. Have it fixed as soon as I can.

What I learned today

Shrinky Dinks are local!

I heard a bunch of police & fire sirens this morning — a good 10 minutes’ worth — so I turned on the local news to see what was up. (And, more importantly, was it gonna mess with my drive in to work. Oh, sure, something might be on fire, but how does it affect me?) (Did I mention I’m not a morning person?) The local news, being about the most useless thing ever, had nothing about what the emergency personnel were up to. They did, however, have a story on Shrinky Dinks’ 35th anniversary (complete with the worst camerawork I’ve ever seen, but that’s a whole ‘nuther story), and were interviewing the woman who created them. She used to be a Scout den mother and was looking for ideas for crafts. She tested the first batch of Shrinky Dinks in her kitchen and initially put them on sale at Brookfield Square Mall. Friday marks the 35th anniversary of the day they went on sale.

I had no idea they were a Wisconsin thing, much less a Milwaukee-area thing. Shrinky Dinks are one of my very favorite thing from childhood. I still make them.

So happy anniversary, Shrinky Dinks. Here’s to another 35+ years!

It’s frustrating when you’re house hunting to come across ads without photos. It’s possibly a little more frustrating — though much funnier — when the ads have photos like these: It’s Lovely! I’ll Take It!

And since you’re going to ask, no, I’m not house hunting at the moment.

(Thanks to BB for the good laughs. I needed them tonight after finding out about Archway / Mother’s filing for bankruptcy. I’m mourning the loss of some of my favorite cookies — Archway’s Dutch Cocoa and Mother’s Circus Animals. Weep.)

And now a word from people I like more than John McCain

As a follow-up to this post, here’s the NY Times’ piece on Milwaukee.

I find it amusing that there are so many Milwaukee tourism stories being published as we head into our hibernation period, but hey — we love visitors all year ’round. Don’t worry, we’ll find something fun for you to do, even if it doesn’t involve being outside or at a festival.

(Big thanks to k-co for reminding me I forgot to read this on Sunday.)

In 1945, when the Shasta Dam in California was completed, a number of towns and structures were flooded over. Recently, the water level in Shasta Lake in California has dropped far enough to expose some of those relics. (Make sure you check out the photo gallery at that link.)
