I’m shocked.

Actually shocked this time.

Local news anchor, Mike Gousha — one of the few local journalists I completely respect and trust, announced he’d be leaving WTMJ after 25 years on the news staff.

I watch so little local news these days, but when I need to, it’s always Mike I turn to. It’s going to be really weird to not have him available.

I ran into him at a cocktail party at my friend Andy’s a couple of years ago. I told him I’d met him years earlier, when I was still in high school, and that meeting him again now, I wasn’t sure if I should thank him or punch him. He looked concerned and asked what I meant. I told him that he was a huge influence on me going into journalism, largely thanks to a lecture of his that I’d gone to in prep for J-school. He paused for a moment, smiled that winning smile of his and said, “I’d probably go with punching.”

Good luck to you, Mike. I hope you succeed at whatever you do next.

Well, I stopped watching Channel 4 when the new news director decided that every report had to look like the freshman film project of the underly educated. High School film projects. Or, as one photojournalist said, “WTMJ has gone from the A and B reel to the A and Me reel.”
The sensationism of the news by Ch 4 depresses me. I found myself watching 58, because they still deliver it, for the most part, without hyperbole, inordinate angst and pandering demeanor.
Channel 4 has swirled to the depths of Fox 6 in the toilet of news delivery. All they need is Brad Hicks now to complete the moron package.
Gee, I wonder if all the emails to Mr Gousha mattered, when I asked if he lost his soul to the cheap and shiny. The devil took Mike Jacobs, and won’t give him back, so I wonder if he decided it was only a matter of time before he found himself actually thinking Susan Kim’s inane laughing every morning was entertaining.

Sad loss for the city. I used to brag about local news when I lived out of town. Now, I wonder what bottom feeding moron of a news director will find an even cheesier delivery of the “facts”.
