Worse than we could have expected

Tuesday, August 1st, 2006 | Again with the hockey

Well, the new Admirals logo is released.

The jerseys aren’t bad… if you put a different crest on them. And ditch that stupid blue line through the font.

*sigh*

Gee. Never could have seen this coming. *snicker*

Update: Tim’s got a nice rant over at his site about the new logo. And after 12+ hours of milling it over, I have decided that this is possibly the Worst. Sports Logo. Ever.

Seriously.

Even the skeleton I got in my McDonald’s Happy Meal (scroll down) is more menacing.

Does Microsoft get a cut when you use their clipart for commercial purposes?

“Why don’t you morons wait and see the new Admirals design before you go off half-cocked? “

We did. It’s really, really bad. Are we now ‘fully-cocked’?

Really? “Worst. Sports Logo. Ever”

Worse than the Marquette Gold?

Seriously though, I know I’ve seen this skeleton character before. There is an cartoon out there somewhere that has this guy in it.

It really is HORRIBLE.
Are they expecting a lot of toddlers as fans this season?
Lame, lame, lame.

Rob — never did see the Gold’s logo. Mind you, they still qualify as worst name ever. :)

It’s just … WEIRD. What are they trying to convey? Happy dead-ness? Cute piracy? Not to be jaded, but I think this would’ve worked better as a U.S. national mascot – just put “Mission Accomplished” underneath and those foreign kids’ll eat it up!

Gah! Even if I stuck forks in my eyes, that would still be the ugliest thing I’ve ever seen.

I looked at the new Bucks logo too. So, apparently, every day is Christmas if your a Bucks fan. Why didn’t they just slap Santa face on there instead of the deer?

Rob – what is the Gold logo? I couldn’t find anything on MU’s site with an acutal logo, just lots of things with “Marquette University” in a new font. I think my favorite logo suggestion from just after the new team name was chosen was the yellow post-it note. ‘Cause really, what is a “Gold”???

Apparently 2006 is the year of the bad new/redesigned logos and/or mascots for Milwaukee area sports teams – Marquette, Bucks, Admirals. And to think, these teams are paying someone a lot of money to come up with these crappy new logos and/or mascots. If these teams are so flush with money that they need to pay someone to come up with this crap, why don’t they just send some our way instead?? We could do a better job of creating this stuff.

Experts agree — the new logo sucks.

(And I still think that Joe Locher is a pretentious fuckwit, especially if this is the caliber of work he uses to justify his services.)

Hello,

As the person who did the design and artwork for the skeletal Admiral in the new logo I would be happy to answer any serious questions about the process of designing the logo (well at least as much as I’m able to). I think there are quite a few misunderstandings here of that process, and who has the final say in what becomes the final designs. I’ll just quickly say that in a perfect situation for an artist or designer they are given total freedom to come up with the design that they feel is best, and it is accepted that way by a client who wholly trusts in their abilities. Sadly this is not the case 99% of the time, and often committee thinking is what then comes into play, usually not for the benefit of the final product. As an example “Hello Kitty” was once brought up during the design phase of this project as something to think about.

Also I am not Joe Locher, but rather the person he hired to design the skeletal admiral character for the concept he was proposing to the team, and eventually to design the final version and do the actual art as well, and I wasn’t given any credit in any of the related articles or such (which is a different matter that I am currently working on…). I personally am quite proud of the work I did on the design. I am very happy with it as an example of my style, and abilities as an artist. And on that hand I can understand if some feel that my style isn’t appropriate for the logo of the team they love. And of course, as any artist should, I welcome all meaningful critiques of the logo, but I also have a good enough sense of humor, and am confident enough in myself as an artist to get a chuckle out of the nasty comments as well (In fact I’m waiting for some really good ones, so come on!). Feel free to check out my other work on my website for a better idea of where I am coming from as an artist, and then decide for yourself whether you think I was the right man for the job or not.

Thanks,

I’m pretty sure this was the proposed logo for the Gold. I think it was scrapped when the clever ploy MU used to make people actually like the Golden Eagle moniker worked.

Fully ready for whatever flames may come, I have to comment: Isn’t Admirals a rather dumb mascot anyway?
