A sad day for Irish music

Thursday, August 2nd, 2007 | You Call This News?

I just got news that Tommy Makem passed away Wednesday. It’s a horrible loss to the Irish music community (and just the community in general, as he was a genuinely nice man), but there’s a little part of me that is happy in the knowledge that he’s no longer suffering with the cancer.

Rest well, Tommy. We sure will miss seeing you every August at the Fest.

(For those of you in the Dover, NH area, there will be a wake Mon-Wed and a funeral mass on Thurs. And for those of you in Ireland, I’m sure there will be plans for a memorial there also. I just don’t know what they are.)

I’ll miss his emails and those lousy animal jokes (although I have been telling the Duck Food joke for some years now).
Tommy’s jokes were funny only if you told them using an Irish accent. He’ll be remembered and missed. He was one of my musical influences.
