As an FYI

Monday, February 9th, 2009 | Life in Czeltistan

While my arm heals, I’m reduced to typing with one hand. Hunt and peck may be old hat to some of you, but I’ve been touch-typing for well over 20 years now, so this is a HUGE handicap for me. (Don’t even get me started on what a pain in the ass being one-handed is for phone calls.)

Between emails (work and personal), IMs, Twitter, Facebook, etc., I get a ton (or, as I like to say, a metric assload) of correspondence every day, not to mention all the other non-correspondence things I need to do on the computer. At the rate I am able to type right now, it is impossible for me to respond to it all. Please don’t feel slighted if I’m unable to give you a response or if my responses are very, very short and impersonal. It’s the only way I can get through it all. (And trust me, even only doing that, by the end of the day, my arm and shoulder are killing me.)

Right now, the goal is for most correspondence to reach the largest possible number of people who need that information. If you want news updates, you’re going to have to be content with checking the blog and checking Twitter (which I don’t update more than a few times a day. I’m mostly using it to keep track of others). Chatty IMs are pretty much right out these days, especially since there’s nothing “instant” about my replies.

Sorry if I’m sounding cranky. I’ve reached that point in my recovery where frustration is setting in. Lots of frustration.

Anne, sorry to have slacked on the blog reading of late. And REALLY sorry to hear about all of your elbow injury woes. May I buy you a drink? And bring it over? And pour it down your throat?

No need to reply, BTW. Save your typing for something more important.

Its a shame the Mac’s speech recognition isn’t useful for general typing.

MacSpeech is $200, talk to your boss and bring up ‘reasonable accomodation’ :-)

Jack(a-my-friend), I will see you at the Atomic thing Saturday. We’ll catch up.

In light of the crankiness, it’s my sincere hope that “Atomic thing” does not mean you’re building a nuclear device.
Save that for next week.
