I think Hempstead has to be a mistake, or there must be like a huge army base or prison there that artificially boosts the population. Bigger than Jacksonville, Syracuse, etc. etc.? Hempstead?

I think there’s some manipulation going on here, some of these (NY, NY especially) look like they include their burbs and some don’t. Metro Denver, for example has way more than half a mil, but that figure for Denver proper is probably correct.

I’m guessing this is either a mistake, or Hempstead’s city limits are really big and somehow legally encompass huge swaths of Long Island.
